About Grammy Awards
The Grammy Awards originated in the 1950s when Hollywood Walk of Fame committee members realized that many important recording industry figures wouldn't qualify for a star on Hollywood Boulevard. They decided to create their own awards similar to the Oscars and Emmys, eventually settling on the name "Grammy" after a mail-in contest, with the earliest postmark from Jay Danna of New Orleans. The Grammy trophy depicts a gilded gramophone, a design that has been refined over the decades. In 1990, the original Grammy design was reworked to use Grammium, a zinc alloy developed by Billings Artworks in Ridgway, Colorado, making the trophy stronger and more durable than the original soft lead design.
