What pollinators do

Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the male part of a flower to the female part, which lets the plant form seeds and fruit. Bees are the best-known pollinators, but butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, birds such as hummingbirds and even bats also do the job.

Honey bees communicate the location of food with the waggle dance, first decoded by Karl von Frisch, who shared a Nobel Prize in 1973. Many pollinators are declining because of habitat loss, pesticides and disease, which is why planting native flowers is one of the simplest ways to help.
