Six flags over Texas

Six nations have governed Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States and the United States. The Republic of Texas, formed after the 1836 revolution against Mexico, lasted until Texas joined the U.S. in 1845. That history is why the Lone Star flag and the Alamo mean so much in the state today.
