About Ancient Egypt

Egyptian civilization grew up along the Nile, whose yearly floods left rich soil for farming. Kings called pharaohs ruled as god-like figures, and huge building projects such as the pyramids of Giza were raised for them. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, built around 2560 BC, is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing.

Hieroglyphs could not be read for centuries until the Rosetta Stone, which carries the same decree in hieroglyphs, Demotic and Greek, helped Jean-François Champollion decipher them in 1822.

The Temple of Esna

The Temple of Esna, south of Luxor, was dedicated to Khnum, the ram-headed god believed to shape people on a potter's wheel. Only its hypostyle hall survives, supported by 24 columns, and its ceiling is covered with astronomical scenes and zodiac figures. Recent cleaning removed centuries of soot and revealed the original colors. See the July 2, 2026 Bing Homepage Quiz answers.
