About London
The Romans founded Londinium on the north bank of the Thames around AD 47–50, and parts of their city wall still stand. London survived the Great Fire of 1666, after which Christopher Wren rebuilt St Paul's Cathedral and dozens of churches.
The Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London are among the most recognizable landmarks in the world. The London Underground, opened in 1863, was the world's first underground railway.
