About Brittany
Brittany juts into the Atlantic between the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. Celtic Britons settled here from Britain in the early Middle Ages, which is why the Breton language is closely related to Welsh and Cornish. Brittany was an independent duchy until it was united with France in 1532.
The region is famous for its prehistoric standing stones at Carnac, its walled corsair city of Saint-Malo, its lighthouses and its food: crêpes, buckwheat galettes, cider and the buttery kouign-amann cake.
Saint-Goustan and Benjamin Franklin
The little harbor of Saint-Goustan in Auray lies where the Loc'h river becomes the tidal Auray river. In December 1776 Benjamin Franklin landed here on his way to Paris to seek French support for the American Revolution. Timber-framed houses still line the quay.
