The story of the Eiffel Tower
The tower was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, the World's Fair that marked 100 years since the French Revolution. Gustave Eiffel's company designed and built it; the original concept came from his engineers Maurice Koechlin and Émile Nouguier, with architect Stephen Sauvestre refining the look. Construction took just over two years.
Many artists signed a protest against the “useless and monstrous” tower, and it was only meant to stand for 20 years. Its value as a radio transmission antenna helped save it. It was the tallest man-made structure in the world until the Chrysler Building in New York overtook it in 1930.
Eiffel Tower facts visitors love
The tower is repainted by hand roughly every seven years, using around 60 tonnes of paint, in a shade called “Eiffel Tower Brown”. Because iron expands in heat, the top can shift by several centimeters on a hot day. At the top, Gustave Eiffel kept a small private apartment, which visitors can still see today.
