About the Peak District

The Peak District became the United Kingdom's first national park in April 1951. It lies mostly in Derbyshire and is split into the limestone “White Peak” in the south and the gritstone and peat moorland of the “Dark Peak” in the north.

Its moors played a key role in the right-to-roam movement: in 1932 hundreds of walkers took part in the Mass Trespass on Kinder Scout, an event often credited with helping create national parks and public access laws. Today the Pennine Way, Britain's first national trail, begins in the village of Edale.

Winnats Pass and Castleton

Winnats Pass is a narrow limestone gorge with towering cliffs that climbs west from Castleton. The rock formed from the remains of sea creatures in a tropical sea hundreds of millions of years ago. Castleton is also known for its show caves, including Peak Cavern, Speedwell Cavern and Treak Cliff, where the rare banded mineral Blue John is found.
