New York City is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. It was founded by the Dutch as New Amsterdam and renamed New York in 1664, after the Duke of York. It was also the first capital of the United States under the Constitution, where George Washington took the oath of office in 1789.
