About Newfoundland

Newfoundland is the island part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was a separate British dominion until it voted to join Canada, becoming its tenth province on March 31, 1949. St. John's, the capital, is one of the oldest European-founded cities in North America, and nearby Cape Spear is the easternmost point of the continent outside Greenland.

At L'Anse aux Meadows, archaeologists found the remains of a Norse settlement from around the year 1000, the earliest known European presence in the Americas. On Signal Hill, Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. The province even has its own time zone, half an hour ahead of Atlantic Time.

Dungeon Provincial Park

Dungeon Provincial Park, near Bonavista, protects a sea cave whose roof collapsed, leaving a large hole open to the sky with two arches where the ocean rushes in. Formations like this are sometimes called a gloup or a blowhole collapse. Atlantic waves carved it over thousands of years. See the July 1, 2026 Bing Homepage Quiz answers.
