How Hyperion was found
Naturalists Chris Atkins and Michael Taylor found Hyperion in 2006 in a remote part of Redwood National Park. Climbers confirmed its height with a tape drop from the top. Its exact location is kept secret to protect the fragile soil and roots from visitors, and the park warns that people who go off-trail to find it can be fined.
Why do coast redwoods grow so tall?
Coast redwoods grow in a narrow strip of northern California and southern Oregon where summer fog is common. Their leaves can absorb moisture from fog, helping them lift water to great heights. Thick, tannin-rich bark protects them from fire and insects, so individual trees can live for well over 1,000 years.
Tallest vs. largest vs. oldest
The tallest tree is not the largest. The largest single-stem tree by volume is General Sherman, a giant sequoia in Sequoia National Park. The oldest known individual trees are Great Basin bristlecone pines in California, around 4,800 years old. And if you count clonal colonies, Pando in Utah (see our Utah quiz) is one of the heaviest organisms on Earth.
