About Angel Falls
Angel Falls pours off Auyán-tepui, a flat-topped table mountain in Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southeastern Venezuela. It is named after American aviator Jimmie Angel, who flew over it in 1933 and landed his plane on top of the tepui in 1937. Its Indigenous Pemón name is Kerepakupai Merú, meaning 'waterfall of the deepest place'.
The falls are so tall that much of the water turns into mist before reaching the bottom. They are reached by boat and on foot, usually in the rainy season when the flow is strongest.
Highest vs. largest waterfalls
Height is only one way to rank waterfalls. Victoria Falls on the Zambia–Zimbabwe border is often called the largest sheet of falling water because of its combined width and height. Niagara Falls is far lower, about 51 m at Horseshoe Falls, but carries a very high volume of water. Underwater, the Denmark Strait cataract between Greenland and Iceland is larger than any of them.
