About Portugal
Portugal is one of Europe's oldest nation-states, with borders largely unchanged since the 13th century. Its alliance with England, sealed by the Treaty of Windsor in 1386, is often described as the oldest diplomatic alliance still in force. In the Age of Discovery, Vasco da Gama reached India by sea in 1498 and Pedro Álvares Cabral reached Brazil in 1500.
Lisbon was largely destroyed by an earthquake, tsunami and fires in 1755 and rebuilt with a grid of streets in the Baixa district. The Carnation Revolution of 1974 ended decades of dictatorship almost without bloodshed. Today Portugal is known for fado music, port wine from the Douro Valley, cork forests and custard tarts.
Praia da Ursa and the Sintra coast
Praia da Ursa sits below steep cliffs just north of Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Its rocky shore is home to limpets, which cling to rocks with a muscular foot and graze on algae when the tide covers them. See the June 11, 2026 Bing Homepage Quiz answers.
