About Spain

Spain covers most of the Iberian Peninsula plus the Balearic and Canary Islands and two cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla. Madrid, near the center of the peninsula, has been the capital since the 16th century. Spanish is the official language nationwide, and Catalan, Galician and Basque are co-official in their regions.

Centuries of Roman, Visigothic and Moorish rule left monuments such as the aqueduct of Segovia, the Mezquita of Córdoba and the Alhambra of Granada. Spain also gave the world flamenco, paella, Cervantes's Don Quixote and the architecture of Antoni Gaudí.

The Bardenas Reales

The Bardenas Reales is a semi-desert natural park in southeastern Navarra. Wind and water have eroded its clay, gypsum and sandstone into canyons, plateaus and lonely rock towers such as Castildetierra. It is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and has been used as a film location, including for Game of Thrones. See the June 3, 2026 Bing Homepage Quiz answers.
